Sustainability matters

The annual CRE sustainability survey from CoreNet Global and Jones Lang LaSalle may have appeared in your email box last week. We’ll have results pretty soon. I have a sneaking suspicion you’ll tell us that green strategies remain a high priority.

It’s hard to believe it’s been barely five years since energy and sustainability issues took center stage. We’ve come a long way in a short time. And yet there is much, much more to do to maximize energy and water efficiency in office space that promotes employee well-being and productivity.

Just in the past few months, we’ve seen leading CRE departments come together with major office portfolio owners in a commitment to ensure that green lease issues do not get lost in negotiations.

As companies start to depend more on the virtual space of a more mobile workforce, the quality of physical space takes on a greater importance. The new way of working supports sustainability in a variety of ways, but probably the most important is by opening opportunities to reduce occupancy, thereby reducing energy and carbon.

So whether we’re talking about physical space or virtual space, sustainability matters.
